Venezuelan Minister of Prison Services, Iris Varela, denounced Wednesday a plan staged by some media outlets to create alarming situations within jails, seeking to damage and sabotage the work carried out by this office in the 57 prison centers nationwide.Interviewed in local television, Varela admitted that the problem in prisons has not been solved and that it will not be solved suddenly. Nevertheless, she highlighted the procedure implemented by the Ministry to take care of inmates."These people (media) do not have truthful information of what is going on in prisons. There are some people there (friends and relatives) and they say they have information," she said, putting as example the case of a journalist who has a brother imprisoned."Of course there is plan, but they will not succeed. They are making a fool of themselves and they are being rejected by the prison population, who desire to solve their legal status," she added. There is the possibility of eliminating the privilege of overnight passes in jails, she said, since sometimes it is used irresponsibly by relatives."I completely disagree with the overnight passes and I have talked with the imprisoned population to start eliminating that gradually. Of course, there will be a new regime and other favorable conditions so that imprisonment can be decent."During the interview, the Minister commented about the amount of 30 million bolivares passed by President Hugo Chavez last January 08, so that her office may carry out three projects to favor inmates, their relatives and workers of the Ministry. These projects are: restoring the facilities of a building in south east state of Bolivar to create a rehab center for inmates; developing an agro-productive center in central state of Guarico and a house of reunion in western state of Tachira. The latest project would also favor 7 thousand people who work in the prison service (guards, lawyers, directors), who require an area of decent training. Besides, the house of reunion is expected to generate sources of employment for the community nearby.Varela also remarked that she has been holing talks with the Executive's Vice-presidency for the productive economic area, so as to create a project through which the State may manufacture cleaning/hygiene items to stop buying them to private firms.
