Honduran Judges'' Sixth Day of Hunger Strike http://www.insidecostarica.com/dailynews/2010/may/23/centralamerica100052302.htm

Five Honduran judges have been on hunger strike for six days in rejection of the decision by the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) of dismissing four magistrates that condemned the coup against former President Manuel Zelaya. On Thursday, another two people joined the strike. At this moment, there are seven strikers demonstrating in La Merced Park, across the Congress, downtown Tegucigalpa.

The demonstrators seek to revert the dismissal of Judges Alonso Chevez and Guillermo Lopez (both strikers), Ramón Enrique Barrios, and Tirza del Carmen Flores announced on May 5. They were sanctioned for condemning the rupture of the constitutional order on June 28, 2009 against the government of Zelaya. Honduran Deputy Marvin Ponce presented on Friday a motion to the National Congress to investigate the SCJ for the arbitrary decision.

The legislator proposed to Congress the appointment of a commission to analyze the administrative behavior of the judicial organ.Judges Guillermo Lopez, Jose Pineda, Gerson Medina, Pablo Munguia and Chevez, who are members of the Association of Judges for Democracy, went on strike on Monday, while the two new members of the group are high school student Michael Urbina and small farmer Teodoro Carbajal. Some authorities of the country have called the judicial power to solve the problem and revert the dismissals that also met the repudiation of the National Front of Popular Resistance and of human-rights organizations.
