According to JournalDZ, the visit represented "a new stage in security and counter-terrorism co-operation between the United States and Algeria". The talks followed the recent launch of the Algeria-US contact group for counter-terror collaboration and came two weeks after a visit by the commander of US Africa Command (AFRICOM). During his two-day trip, General Carter F. Ham emphasised his country's willingness to support the joint efforts led by Algeria aimed at countering al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). "A safe, stable and secure Africa is in everyone's best interests, including the United States," he said.
