Candidate of the Green Party of Canada in the upcoming federal elections stressed Tehran's right to access peaceful nuclear technology, and lashed out at the West's unfair and double-standard attitude towards the Iranian nuclear program."Iran is entitled to the right to use the peaceful nuclear energy. There should be a difference in dealing with those countries that have signed the NPT (nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) and those who have not," Paul Maillet, a retired Air Force Colonel and candidate for Ottawa Orleans, said in a round table held at the FNA office here in Tehran on Sunday.
He pointed to the unfair media propaganda against Iran's nuclear program, and reminded that while Islamabad, New Delhi and Tel Aviv possess atomic bombs, Tehran is just seeking access to the peaceful nuclear technology. During the meeting also attended by Akbar Manoussi of Ottawa Vanier, Maillet further underlined Iran's major influence on regional developments, and stressed that peace and tranquility in the Middle-East needs the active role and participation of Iran. "The decisions taken by Iran are very important and can affect the fate of the other nations in the region," Maillet underscored.
Washington and its Western allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program, while they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Tehran stresses that the country has always pursued a civilian path to provide power to the growing number of Iranian population, whose fossil fuel would eventually run dry. Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment
Tehran is now under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's illegitimate calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment.Tehran has dismissed West's demands as politically tainted and illogical, stressing that sanctions and pressures merely consolidate Iranians' national resolve to continue the path. Analysts believe that the US is at loggerheads with Iran due mainly to the independent and home-grown nature of Tehran's nuclear technology, which gives the Islamic Republic the potential to turn into a world power and a role model for the other third-world countries.
