Iran Leads Int'l Efforts to Draft Nuclear Disarmament Convention http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.php?nn=9003180982

Drafting an international convention on nuclear disarmament will stand atop Iran's agenda at the second international conference on nuclear disarmament due to be held here in Tehran in coming days. "Preparing a draft convention on confrontation against nuclear weapons at global levels is among our efforts in the international conference on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation," Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh told reporters in a press conference Wednesday. He said that the conference is part of a long process pursued by Iran during the last 20 years in line with its principled policies and the regional nations'

demand for a nuclear-free world.Akhoundzadeh further said that the upcoming nuclear disarmament conference will pave the ground for a ministerial meeting in Iran next year. The Iranian Foreign Ministry plans to hold the second international conference on nuclear disarmament here in Tehran next Sunday and Monday. The second conference dubbed 'A Review of Existing Challenges in Nuclear Disarmament and Dismantlement of other WMDs' will be held at the Foreign Ministry's Political and International Studies Office on June 12-13.

The meeting will pursue the goals defined in the last year's international conference on nuclear disarmament. The first International conference on nuclear disarmament dubbed as ' Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapon for No One' was held in Tehran on April 18-19, 2010 with officials from different countries of the world in attendance. Iran, an NPT-signatory, has called for the removal of all weapons of mass destruction from across the globe.

The UN General Assembly approved a draft resolution proposed by Iran on nuclear disarmament in October amid strong opposition by the US, Britain, France, Israel and a number of western countries. The resolution ratified in the first committee of the UN General Assembly called on all nuclear countries to annihilate their nuclear weapons under the supervision of international bodies.  More than 100 countries, including non-nuclear members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), voted for the resolution. The resolution also urged Israel to join the NPT and allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect its nuclear facilities.
