Fouad Ajami, the neoconservative Arab columnist and commentator, has been awarded the 13th annual Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Journalism. Instituted in 1999 with an endowment from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, the award commemorates Eric Breindel, a former editorial page editor of the New York Post. It is given to “the columnist, editorialist or reporter who best reflects the spirit of Mr. Breindel’s writings: Love of Country and its democratic institutions as well as the act of bearing witness to the evils of totalitarianism.”

With previous recipients including such neocon luminaries as Charles Krauthammer, Bret Stephens, Max Boot, Victor Davis Hanson and Jeff Jacoby, one could be forgiven for wondering which country is being loved. Speaking of beloved democracies, back in February Fouad Ajami assured Haaretz readers that Israel had nothing to fear from Arab democracy. It would seem that the past winners who feted Ajami during a ceremony at Le Bernardin restaurant in New York’s Midtown agree wholeheartedly.
