Russia has raised questions about the true goals behind the new round of unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran over its nuclear program. According to IRNA, The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Friday saying that the US sanctions imposed on the Iranian port operator Tidewater Middle East Company and the country's national airline, Iran Air, "raise serious questions".

In the statement, Moscow voiced opposition to the latest round of unilateral sanctions because they could put Russian businesses at risk and noted, “Such actions, based on an extra-territorial use of US law, potentially create a situation when Russian business structures cooperating with these companies could be affected."

The Russian Foreign Ministry said, "This position is absolutely inadmissible for us and needs a total review", and added that the US actions against the Islamic Republic strengthen “suspicions that the US sanctions policy is pursuing goals other than enforcing the regime of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."
