VENEZUELA- Parliament to probe goal of foreign financing to opposition http://www.avn.info.ve/node/72698
A mixed committee of the National Assembly will investigate a denunciation made on Monday by lawmaker Earle Herrera during the plenary on the foreign financing to opposition political parties destined to promote interventionist plans in the country. The legislative committee will be composed of parliamentarians from the Interior Policies and Foreign Affairs committees, informed the first vice-president of the National Assembly, Aristobulo Isturiz.
In the plenary held on Monday, Earle Herrera denounced that opposition parties, gathered in the so-called Unity Table (MUD in Spanish), are asking for financing to far right groups in the United States and Europe. The entire socialist bloc in the parliament warned that such action could represent a threat for Venezuela"s sovereignty and self-determination.“The thing is that there is a risk that amid the internal political struggle for power in Venezuela a foreign factor could be intervening in said struggle. That is the fact and we have to evaluate the risks of such actions,” lawmaker Francisco Arias Cardenas (United Socialist Party of Venezuela, PSUV) added.
In the meantime, opposition parliamentarians trivialized the issue during the debate and they just asked for physical proofs of such foreign financing to the MUD.PSUV lawmaker Cilia Flores presented some documents evidencing US State Department financing opposition political parties in 2007 and 2009 amounting four million dollars, “using the excuse of the alleged strengthening to freedom of speech and democracy.”After some proofs were presented, opposition"s arguments changed drastically. Indeed, MUD representative Hermes Garcia said that debating over threats against country"s sovereignty was a “political waste.”
“Is this the debate benefiting the people? This debate just adds more frustration to the existing ones,” Garcia stated. In his opinion, the socialist bloc just make a scene to request an investigation against opposition parties, but Venezuela is not really threatened by any foreign intervention. In response, Diosdado Cabello (PSUV) explained that the opposition tried to hide the denunciation, “because most of the people in that table (MUD) believe in shortcuts, in coups. People in opposition do not believe in democracy. The president of Venezuela followed closely the debate and he congratulated socialist parliamentarians through his Twitter account, @chavezcandanga, mostly Cabello for his speech.“Bravo my dear comrade Cabello! With such arguments, you just crushed opposition! Bravo!”
