CENTRAL AMERICAN ORGANISATIONS DEMAND RELEASE OF CUBAN FIVE
Member organisations of the Central American Common Union Platform (PSCC) demanded the immediate release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly held in U.S. prisons for over 14 years."We demand to listen to the clamour of Latin America and all progressive forces in the world that demand the immediate release of five Cuban heroes imprisoned by the empire," according to the declaration from the Executive Council of the PSCC, issued to Prensa Latina.Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez, known as The Five, were arrested in September 1998 in Miami for monitoring South Florida-based terrorist groups that fund, plan and carry out attacks on Cuba. The members of the PSCC also called upon the U.S. government to lift "the unjust economic, commercial and financial blockade that threatens the sovereignty and self-determination of a free and sovereign country like Cuba, which is an example of struggle and dignity for Latin America." They saluted the Cuban people and celebrated their efforts and achievements in the revolutionary process, which, they said, teaches us that "nothing has been said and there is a long path to walk to build a fairer and more equitable world." The PSSC is made up of several trade unions gathered at national boards in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama. It has a coordinator and an observer in each of these countries.
