The discredited and now obscure, defected Syrian ambassador Nawaf Fares, had claimed mid-summer of 2012 that the Syrian government had been behind the influx of foreign terrorists that entered Iraq during the later phases of the US-British occupation of Iraq. These terrorists took part in campaigns of sectarian-driven violence that divided and destroyed an already devastated Iraq. Fares spectacularly claimed that he himself was involved in organizing terrorist death squads in a hamhanded attempt to implicate the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.What Fares actually revealed however, was an invisible state within Syria, one composed of Saudi-aligned, sectarian extremism, operating not only independently of the government of President Assad, but in violent opposition to it. This "state-within-a-state" also so happens to be directly affiliated with Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood, the leading forces now fighting in Syria with significant Western-backing against the Syrian government.
[ED NOTES;TO BACK UP THESE POINTS MADE ABOVE SEE BELOW AS WELL...CLICK LINK FOR WHOLE ARTICLE,I JUST CITED ONE PARAGRAPH ABOVE...THERE ARE SOME SO CALLED LEFTISTS WHO CHAMPION AN INCOMING INTERVENTION OF SYRIA BY THE WESTERN ZIO-POWERS ON ABSURD CLAIMS THAT SYRIA AND US AND WESTERN FORCES WORKED TOGETHER DURING THE WAR ON TERROR AFTER IRAQ INVASION..THIS IS A FAULTY CRITIQUE..WICH IS HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS REPORT(ALSO CITED BY CFR AS WELL) Guiding Principles for U.S. Post-Conflict Policy in - James A. Baker III ... CRS Report for Congress
Al Qaeda. In some instances, Syria has cooperated with the United States against terrorist organizations, such as Al Qaeda.[ed notes;of course Syria had no problems handing over terrorists from alqaeda,)because these were terrorists working for gulf states in line with us allies and interests(they gave u.s. pretext and justification for colonial project)...why wouldnt they contain and even arrest muslim brotherhood and other salafist terrorist networks?next you see they exempted hamas and hezballah, what does that tell you?thats it wasnt targetting legitimate resistance against west(hamas however turned over to zionized agenda during zio arab spring)not even sunni groups, just those who were in line with west and its gcc proxies...
With a few exceptions such as Hamas and Hezbollah, the generally secular Syrian government tends to regard Islamic fundamentalist organizations as destabilizing, although there have been indications since early 2006 that the Syrian regime has been courting Islamists as a counterweight to other internal dissident groups. [ed notes;courting wich islamists against internal dissident groups hezballah of course...against wich internal dissent groups?mb of course..
According to a subsequent news report, Syria helped unravel a plot by an Al Qaeda group in Canada to attack U.S. and Canadian government installations.22 some Members of Congress have expressed the view that Syrian cooperation against Al Qaeda has waned or has been exaggerated. [ed notes;exaggerated by whom?by the west of course,to discredit assad, after all the whole report proves us was isolating Syria,at this very time accusing it of allowing proxies to attack us interests!(not those aligned with us allies in region however) read whole report, and you will see that us congress and us administration ,blast syria for supplying nightvision goggles to helping insurgency against us troops, and much more..some obviously false like...
Accusations of Syrian Interference. U.S. and Iraqi officials have accused Syria on several occasions since late 2004 of interfering in Iraq and aiding the late Abu Musab Zarqawi, the head of an Al Qaeda affiliate in Iraq. The Iraqi Ambassador to Syria, for example, said U.S. and Iraqi troops had captured photos of Syrian officials during combat operations in an insurgent stronghold in Iraq in November.18 On December 16, 2004, President Bush warned Syria and Iran that “meddling in the internal affairs of Iraq is not in their interests.” His warning followed an accusation by then Iraqi Defense Minister Hazem Shaalan that Syria is aiding Zarqawi and agents of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. The Syrian Foreign Ministry dismissed Shaalan’s remarks as “baseless accusations” but did not refer to President Bush’s remarks.
[ED NOTES:SYRIAS CLAIMS THESE CLAIMS WERE BASELESS WAS TRUE OF COURSE... ZARQAWI WAS AFTER ALL A CIA ASSET! Who is Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi? | Global Research
Following reports of a secret meeting in Syria held by Zarqawi and key aides during April 2005, week-long fighting took place along the Syrian border in mid-May, resulting in hundreds of deaths including nine U.S. Marines. According to a press report on May 18, an unnamed U.S. official characterized Syria as a main conduit for pro-Zarqawi fighters entering Iraq.In a meeting with an Iraqi official on May 20, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice criticized Syria for “allowing its territory to be used to organize terrorist attacks against innocent Iraqis” and added that Syria “should not think itself immune from the way that the region is going.”
[ed note;when us then threatened to engage syria over that and other support against anti us  groups in region,Syria did what it need to do to,just enough to stave off a pretext for west to attack it as they did iraq..they set up border controls, manned stations around borders, wich worked, but not enough for the neocons and zionists behind occupation..see
According to the 2005 terrorism report (see above), in May 2005 the Syrian Government ended intelligence cooperation with the United States, citing U.S. complaints that Syrian cooperation against border crossings into Iraq was inadequate
[ed notes;Syria took steps to protect its country against occupiers accusations, that it was facilitating attacks against west in Iraq(while allowing some of them to continue,an intellgent strategy in my opinion, but one wich backfired)..US didnt buy it or like it,but Syria had enough cover to protect itself at international levels of discussion around issue!these so called leftists who support regime change in Syria, are ignorant of facts(see whole report i left out much more evidence of us targetting syria vs contrary  claims of cooperation between both)wich prove Syria wasnt an ally to west but rather a clever enemy, wich protected his own country from invasion, while strengthening the opposition to the zionist invaders...where these fake leftists criticize Bashar i give him credit!!!The highlighted paragraph piece by cartallucy at top of post nails it on head...
