Lawyer Serdar Öztürk, who is currently standing trial on charges of membership in a terrorist organization, threatened prosecutors overseeing the investigation into Ergenekon, a criminal network accused of working to foment chaos in society that would eventually lead to a military takeover, with a coup d’état in a recently revealed letter he sent last year to the İstanbul Prosecutor’s Office.
A phone conversation between Öztürk and an unidentified individual which made its way to a number of news portals also apparently showed the lawyer openly threatening Ergenekon prosecutors. The phone conversation dates back to March 2009. Öztürk is quoted as saying: “My colonel has been jailed for two months now. Everywhere will turn into a pool of blood if he is not released.” He refers to retired Col. Levent Göktaş as “his colonel.”
