Regarding the use of selective sanctions for nuclear disarmament, Valero questioned the attempts to impose the obligations derived from international agreements on only a few countries, while others remained exempt from them.Valero emphasized the Venezuelan government’s concern related to “a group of countries has been applying pressure against the Islamic Republic of Iran to force it to renounce its legitimate right to develop its nuclear industry as a means to seek technological independence and the diversification of its energy supply sources.

”Valero favorably viewed the establishment of Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zones (NWFZ) based upon agreements freely established among the states forming the zones. Furthermore, he ratified Venezuela’s support of a NWFZ in the Middle East, according to the resolutions reached in the UN Security Council and the General Assembly.

“It is indispensable that Israel, the only country that has not joined the NPT nor has declared its intention to do it, give up its nuclear weapons, joins this treaty without delay and submits its nuclear facilities to the IAEA’s safeguard regimes under the provisions of Resolution 487 (1981) of the Security Council,” demanded the Venezuelan diplomat.
