Obama appoints Venezuelan colonial expert as Ambassador to Colombia http://www.pr-inside.com/obama-appoints-venezuelan-colonial-expert-r1881737.htm

President Obama has appointed Peter Michael McKinley as Ambassador to Colombia, replacing William Brownfield.McKinley, who leaves his post as US Ambassador to Lima, is an expert on Venezuela and has written a book on Venezuela's colonial period. The new Ambassador will take up his post after the Colombian elections set for May 30 and present his credentials to whoever is the new Colombian President.

Observers see the appointment as a sign that Obama is giving more importance to South America and what is perceived as the major continental threat to US interests in the region, President Chavez and Bolivarian Socialism. The current Ambassador to Venezuela, Patrick Duffy was expelled from the country in September 2008 and returned to Caracas in July 2009.

McKinley's appointment to Colombia rather than Venezuela is seen as a continuation of the US policy to turn Colombia into a proxy state to defend US interests on the continent.McKinley's job will to help the Colombian government in its microphone war against its neighbor aimed at destabilizing Venezuela domestically and internationally. The new Colombian government will lead an attack on South American institutions, which have not included the USA or Canada.

comment-amb mckinley's previous post was as ambassador to Peru. Here is how mckinley puts the relationship last year with Peru...U.S. Ambassador to Peru P. Michael McKinley: U.S. - Peru Relations http://blogs.state.gov/index.php/entires/us_peru_relations/

AMBASSADOR MCKINLEY: U.S. relations with Peru at this moment are going through probably their best phase in the last 40 years. It’s based on the work we’ve done together supporting the transition to democracy in Peru since the turn of the century, a growing economic partnership, a partnership in addressing strategic and transnational issues, fighting the narcotics trade, the drug trafficking, and on people-to-people contact.

Economic ties are important for promoting growth and prosperity; and growth and prosperity in these countries helps reduce poverty, create opportunities for a greater number of the peoples in the region. So the benefits are much more than strictly economic. They cascade throughout these societies and create the conditions for sustainable development, for greater social justice, greater opportunities for a wider number of people, and alleviating poverty.
