House Republicans Tuesday unveiled a draconian plan to cut nearly $6 trillion from anticipated spending on social programs over the next decade. The proposal seeks to privatize Medicare and Medicaid programs that provide cost effective treatment for the poor, sick and elderly. The proposal also includes a reduction of the corporate tax rate by 10%. Ryan's plan would privatize Medicare, giving beneficiaries vouchers to pay for care, and turn Medicaid from a partnership between Washington and the states into block grants from the federal government. Ezra Klein writes in the Washington Post: “The proposal puts the intentions of the GOP in black and white: the wholesale destruction of the health care safety net and a privatization agenda that would decimate the hard won gains of the 20th century.” Medicaid costs 20% less for adults and 27% less for children than private insurance.
