Saudi Arabia is the mastermind of the counter-revolution in the Arab world aimed at sabotaging the reform movement in countries like Egypt and Bahrain, the Munich-based daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung said on Thursday.It said that the Saudi Arabian counter-revolution began with Riyadh's invasion  of Bahrain in mid-March geared at the brutal suppression of pro-freedom protests in the tiny Arab kingdom. The paper pointed out that Saudi Arabia was deeply worried over potential spillover effects of the Bahraini rebellion into its own country. 

A major focus of Riyadh's counter-revolution is Egypt which is viewed by Saudi Arabia as its main rival in the Arab world.According to the report, Saudi Arabia has provided four billion US dollars to Egypt directed at influencing the internal political developments in that country. The daily said there had been speculations in Egypt that Saudi-backed Salafis had fuelled the recent tensions between Christian and Muslims hoping to discredit the Egyptian revolution. 

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is also using its political clout to torpedo the reform movement in its Persian Gulf backyard by establishing a 20-billion dollar aid fund. Riyadh also lured Jordan and Morocco with lots of money to join the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council in a bid to stifle the reform process in those two countries, Süddeutsche cited David Roberts of the Qatar-based think-tank Royal United Services Institute as saying. Roberts voiced fear that Moroccan and Jordanian troops could also be used to crush future uprisings in the Persian Gulf Arab states.
