In recent weeks, Colombia has been at the center of a series of events that in grand part adhere to imperialist interests and that compromise the security of the continent, as well as other events that express the democratic and anti-imperialist current running through the continent.
The head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, stopped in the region of Catatumbo bordering Venezuela to announce that brigade commanders, veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, will be joining Colombian troops in the fight against “international terrorism”. Israeli Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak, prioritizing its war against Iran, expressed his concern about the relationship and agreements of various Latin American countries with the Persian nation.
US Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, justified his own visit to Colombia as strengthening the fight against drugs and terrorism. He described Venezuela’s increasing weapons acquisition and its relationship to Iran as a serious danger to the region. He also announced the sale of a new lot of helicopters to Colombia.
The failed Summit of the Americas in Cartagena sought to be the stage for imperial hegemonic imposition and the positioning of Santos as the regional leader disputing the leadership role of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Instead, the arrogance of the gringos and their veto of Cuba caused the absence of the presidents of Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Venezuela; Bolivia played the role of challenging the imperialists’ policies; and, due to the lack of solidarity by the host president regarding the sovereignty of the Malvina Islands, the President of Argentina made a sudden departure. Thus, this forum - until not long ago under imperialist control - is dying, just as is its OAS.
There are in Colombia 25 bases with presence of US soldiers, military advisors, and mercenaries and they are preparing 7 of those bases so that the Pentagon can carry out war maneuvers on a grand scale and with continental reach. In addition, military agreements between the two governments allow the gringos access to all the airports, ports, roads and territory of Colombia to move US troops and military equipment. The US has turned Colombia into the country with the largest army in Latin America, equipped with all the latest generation military technology. And the previous government carried out test runs of hostilities against Ecuador and Venezuela. Clearly the objective in creating this warring power is for the purpose of intervening in neighboring countries where the popular democratic processes are advancing and where they refuse to remain subservient to imperialist interests. At the same time that Santos is engaging in acts of diplomatic distraction, normalizing relations with the countries of ALBA, the military preparations of the Pentagon accelerate in parallel.
VENEZUELA, IN THE EYE OF THE HURRICANE
As Venezuela has become the country with the largest proven oil reserves in the world, as president Chavez leads a government that promotes a socialist Bolivarian revolution, and as processes of Latin American integration are advanced that no longer work for the benefit of the US, the empire considers this revolutionary and anti-imperialist government to be the principal regional enemy and has set a course towards overthrowing it by engaging in various actual conspiracies.
In 2012 the media war against Venezuela’s Bolivarian government has intensified because on October 7th presidential elections will be held. Taking advantage of the illness of President Hugo Chavez, the pattern of opinion of all the oligarchic media has remained constant, announcing his supposedly imminent death and his difficulties in governing. As such they have tried to reduce the overwhelming lead shown by the polls, which have the president winning by more than 60 percent.
At the same time the media line is spread that there will be fraud and that part of the electorate will rise up to claim victory by the opposition candidate. No wonder that, with the help of a paramilitary entrenched within the Colombian armed forces, acts of terrorism are being prepared against the population, economic centers, public service infrastructure, government installations, and the military. In this way, pockets of armed resistance could be established against the Chavez government which would have their beachheads on the border with Colombia and which would be backed by the states bordering the neighboring country, the Pentagon and NATO.
In this scenario, as part of the electoral campaign, steps may be underway in the imperialist military intervention against Venezuela and that would explain the constant parade of high-ranking war officialdom through Colombia.
It is not surprising that this aggression follows the outline used in Libya and Syria. Initially there would be support for the “anti-Chavez rebels”, but they would then seek a border incident so that Colombia could declare war on Venezuela. The gringos would not involve their troops directly, to avoid the internal cost that casualties bring it. It would use the great destructive power of its air force and missile bombardment, which it would carry out from the 4th Fleet based in the Caribbean, as well as from Colombian bases and those in Aruba and Curacao.
The Pentagon has sought the commitment of Guyana, which is why the two nations carried out joint military exercises there in March 2012.
Obama has explained his military strategy as a state of permanent and simultaneous war to maintain world hegemony, reducing the size of his army but increasing its war technology, such as unmanned drones and supporting interventionist allied forces such as NATO. And we all know the role played by Colombia in the region.
Secretary of Defense Panetta further explained: “The reality is you could face a land war in Korea, and at the same time face threats in the Straits of Hormuz. We have the capability, with this Joint Force, to deal with those kinds of threats, to be able to confront them, and to be able to win.”
The pretexts against Venezuela are: that it is part of international terrorism because it allegedly supports Colombian guerrillas and radical Islamic groups. Venezuela is also condemned as a narco-republic “because the drugs produced in Colombia for the industrialized countries are exported through its territory.”
A smear campaign has already begun against Venezuela, through the former Magistrate Eladio Aponte Aponte, who has taken refuge in Miami and who was removed from the Venezuelan Supreme Court as a result of his ties to drug lord Walid Makled.
So it seems that the empire’s warmongering hurricane, which has wrecked havoc in the Middle East and Central Asia, is also headed towards South America. And the Colombian ruling class will be the point of the spear for attacking its sister republics. Thus, sadly, Colombia continues with its role as the Cain of the Americas.
