The Venezuelan goverment demanded the U.S. extradition of fugitive terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, who was acquitted on immigration fraud charges by a court in El Paso, Texas, in a trial described as a farce.Once the ruling was made public on Friday, the Bolivarian government reiterated its request, made since 2005, for Posada Carriles to be extradited to Venezuela for the killing of 73 people aboard a Cuban airlinere bombed in mid-flight in 1976, according to a Venezuelan Foreign Ministry press release. The text informed that the U.S charge dâÖaffaires was summoned to appear Monday to be given a diplomatic note insisting on the extradition request.
The official document also demanded the immediate start of legal procedures to secure compliance with the bilateral extradition treaty signed in 1922.In 1985, Posada Carriles escaped from a Venezuelan prison while awaiting sentencing for the bombing of the Cuban plane. He is currently living in the United States, and on Friday was aquitted of 11 counts of perjury, obstruction of justice and immigration fraud. The jury finding was rejected by Caracas, which denounced the fugitiveâÖs protection and the White House use of double standards in its international war on terror.
