BRASIL,VIA CAMPESINA AND SUPPORT FOR PALESTINE...Palestine takes its place in the global farmers' struggle

With the "Farmers, rural workers and fishermen's conference: Building Via Campesina in Palestine," Palestinians look towards the global farmers' struggle as a bridge to the international community and another means to resist Israel's colonial policies. Internationals also learn about the non-violent strategies Palestinians use on the ground in the West Bank. The opening day focused on Palestinian political parties and their political and social analyses of the local farmers’ struggle. The land is the core of the conflict and the Israeli colonization process: through the separation barrier, the ongoing expansion of Jewish settlements in West Bank, the uprooting of olive trees, and the settlers’ violence against farmers and shepherds, the Israeli authorities are stealing the most important economical resource of the Palestinian families. The goal of these policies is to push the Palestinian people out of their homeland --a process referred to as “quiet transfer.” Once the land is “empty,” Israeli authorities “legally” annex it by using an Ottoman law that was created in 1858.While the freedom of Palestine depends on the liberation of the land, the land is more than a resource for the Palestinian people: it is their tradition, their history, their homeland. The “Farmers, rural workers and fishermen’s conference: Building Via Campesina in Palestine,” which took place in early November, aimed to create an international network of farmers to support the Palestinian farmers’ struggle against the occupation and continued confiscation of land. Brazilian guests from Via Campesina presented several proposals: farmers’ brigades to exchange working experience; building a technical formation school in Palestine for fishermen, farmers and workers--an education center that eventually could receive students from neighboring Arab nations; and increasing pressure on the left and center-left Latin American governments to support Palestine’s production.“Why do we have to consume Greek or Spanish olive oil in Brazil when Palestine has the best olive oil in the world?”, asked another member of the Movement of Landless (Movimiento Sin Tierra-MST).Via Campesina is a coalition of 150 local and international organizations in 70 different countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America. As a global movement, it brings together millions of peasants, farmers and small producers in order to defend sustainable agricultural production and to fight against the policies of international corporations. The grassroots and multicultural movement’s ultimate goal is to achieve social justice and respect for human rights.
