Chavez denounces illegal incursion of submarine in Venezuelan waters http://www.avn.info.ve/contenido/president-chavez-denounces-illegal-incursion-submarine-venezuelan-waters The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, denounced Wednesday that a unidentified submarine violated the country's territorial waters. The ship was detected thanks to the fast actions of the Venezuelan submarine fleet and the navy, Chavez said and he added that it was chased but managed to escape."We detected a submarine in Venezuelan waters. We can not charge anyone, though we have our suspicions. This ship ran away; it was chased but it escaped because it was faster than ours. Due to the speed that machine achieved and the size, we think it was a nuclear-powered submarine," said the President to a TV talk show host last night. He said the Venezuelan Armed Forces avoided provocations and made all efforts to get in touch with the ship and warn it, until it fled. The action is under investigation. "We can not charge anyone because we have not evidences. But it was doubtlessly a submarine. You know how empires behave; they are used to go around the Caribbean Sea and go everywhere."It is the duty of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces to protect and defend the sovereignty of the Venezuelan territory in the sea, air or land, Chavez added.Besides, he reminded that the Bolivarian Navy is on maneuvers in the Orchila Island, located 160 kilometers away of the Venezuelan capital city, Caracas, amid actions to strengthen the sea defense of the country.
