Over 800,000 Venezuelans Have Benefitted from Social Missions “Ribas” and “Madres del Barrio” http://venezuela-us.org/2011/11/17/over-800000-venezuelans-have-benefitted-from-social-missions-“ribas”-and-“madres-del-barrio”/ This week marked the eighth anniversary of “Mission Ribas,” one of the fundamental pillars of the process of educative transformation being promoted by the Venezuelan government. So far under the program, over 630,000 people have graduated from secondary school and almost 100,000 more are on the way to receiving their diploma.Additionally, through its “Mission Madres del Barrio,” the Venezuelan government has provided over 90,000 Venezuelan women with economic aid, a total investment of $348.8 million this year, according statements by the Minister of Women’s Affairs and Gender Equality, Nancy Pérez, on Wednesday.
Mission Ribas-President Hugo Chávez launched Mission Ribas in 2003 to offer educational opportunities to Venezuelans who had failed to finish secondary school.By 1998, there were about five million Venezuelans lacking secondary education, partly a consequence of the privatization policies developed during the last decades of the 20 century. As part of the new policy of free universal education at all levels, the Vice Minister for Strategic Planning at the Ministry of University Education, Luis Bonilla, said that those that graduated from Mission Ribas have the opportunity to continue studying at one of the 24 “National Training Programs” offered by Mission Sucre, as well as other universities under the Association of Bolivarian Rectors (ARBOL).
Mission Madres del Barrio-The Minister of Women’s Affairs and Gender Equality said that beneficiaries of Mission Madres del Barrio receive $287 monthly, which represents 80 percent of the minimum wage.During a televised interview, the minister said that the mission, created in 2006, has $26.5 million to assist women living in poverty through financial aid and training in socio-productive activities, giving them access to health care and education.“The beneficiaries of this mission also receive training courses in politics and work that allow them to develop the freedom to create their own products, and they also integrate other women and assist them with developing projects,” the minister said.Last Tuesday, November 15, the Venezuelan government allocated $4.6 million to finance 470 projects involving over 2,300 women. A “Great Mission”-President Chávez announced Tuesday that the three government-funded social missions known as “Mission José Gregorio Hernández,” “Mission Niño Jesús” and “Mission Madres del Barrio” (which target people with disabilities, pregnant women and newborns and mothers living in extreme poverty, respectively) will be merged into a single “great mission” aimed at universalizing social security. He said that the fusion of these social programs will benefit low-income people and create a system to build the highest amount of happiness possible for Venezuelans.
