Socialist legislators of the Venezuelan bench at the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino) deplored on Thursday the attitude assumed by the US government against UNESCO, as a reprisal for admitting Palestine as a member state.According to a press release posted on the UNESCO website, Parlatino President Rodrigo Cabezas highlighted the organization´s important support for peace, equality, justice and for the access to education and culture for all.Cabezas said it is a contradiction that the government led by Nobel Prize laureate President Barack Obama is the one denying resources to a main organization of mankind and trying to affect its operation."We deplore the US attitude of refusing to provide resources to UNESCO for this year worth about 20 million USD, as well as the suspension of the quota for 2012 worth over 80 million USD," he said. The note indicates that the Socialist legislators of Parlatino suggested that the member countries of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) should assume the US quota for this year and the next.Cabezas took the opportunity to reiterate the support to the Palestinian people and said: "We voted at UNESCO for Palestine to have full right to be part of an institution that works for education, culture and peace."
