A US government plan to safeguard 43 tons of weapons-grade plutonium by mixing it with fuel for commercial power reactors is coming under fire in the wake of Japan's nuclear disaster. Blended with uranium reactor fuel, the plutonium would be transformed into a new fuel called mox, short for mixed oxide. One of the stricken Fukushima reactors uses mox and nuclear experts worry its widespread release would increase cancer deaths by 30%. A plan to bury plutonium was canceled in 2002 by the Bush administration. Spencer Abraham, energy secretary at the time, is now an executive with Areva, the mox producer overseeing fuel conversion at a former weapons plant in South Carolina.
