A bipartisan group of sixty-six former U.S. government officials and foreign policy experts sent a letter to President Obama today, urging a decisive response to the Syrian situation. The letter, released by the Foreign Policy Initiative, recommends “direct military strikes against the pillars of the Assad regime,” calls on the U.S. to “provide vetted moderate elements of Syria’s armed opposition with the military support required to identify and strike regime units armed with chemical weapons,” and argues that failure to respond to the use of chemical weapons would “show the world that America’s red lines are only empty threats.”
