British lecturers and academics have rejected attempts to ban speakers and prevent free speech at universities on Israel by equating anti-Zionism with anti-semitism.At their annual congress in Harrogate, north England, the Universities and College Union (UCU) voted overwhelming for a motion to disassociate lecturers and academics from the 'so-called EUMC (European Union Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia) working definition of anti-semitism'.
The UCU, which represents over 120,000 academics, lecturers and administrators, will now 'campaign for open debate on campus concerning Israel's past history and current policy, while continuing to combat all forms of racial and religious discrimination', the motion said. Sue Blackwell, member of the union's national executive council, said that the definition, while not formally adopted by the EU or the UK government, was “created by Zionist organisations in order to conflate anti-Zionism with anti-semitism.”
“The people who defend its use want us to believe that any support for boycotts of Israel is anti-semitic. I am proud that UCU has become the first British trade union to speak out against this nonsense. This marks the beginning of the end for this pernicious definition,' Blackwell said.
