Iran’s permanent envoy to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has called on the U.S. and Russia to live up to their commitments to eradicate nuclear weapons. During the 64th meeting of the OPCW executive council, which started on Tuesday in The Hague, a failure by the U.S. and Russia to meet their nuclear commitments is being discussed.Speaking at the meeting, Kazem Qaribabadi, Iran’s ambassador to the Netherlands as well as to the OPCW, expressed concerns over the U.S., Russia’s non-compliance with the OPCW laws, saying the organization should take necessary measures, which would also protect its credibility. 

Qariabadi said the main objective of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is to make efforts to eradicate all chemical weapons, adding the countries possessing chemical weapons have to annihilate their chemical weapons within 15 years after the signing of the convention. He noted non-compliance with the convention will endanger peace and global security.

If some countries do not meet their commitments in this regard, their behaviors should be regarded as the violation of human rights, he stated.He went on to say that certain countries are trying to change the mission of the CWC to their own benefit.The OPCW is the implementing body of CWC. The OPCW is given the mandate to achieve the object and purpose of the convention, to ensure the implementation of its provisions, including those for international verification of compliance with it, and to provide a forum for consultation and cooperation among states parties
