Iran plans to begin work on 2 separate phases of the giant South Pars Field in the Persian Gulf early this fall, Iranian oil official told reporters.Phases 17 and 18 of the giant field will join a total of 24 phases after construction work begin next fall. ‘Preliminary exploitation of phases 17 and 18 of the South Pars field will begin in the second half of the current [Iranian] calendar year (beginning March 21),’ Mousa Souri a South ParsGas and Oil Company director said on Wednesday. The world’s largest natural gas condensate is shared between Iran and Qatar with an estimated 50.97 trillion cubic meters of gas and around 50 billion barrels of valuable condensates.

Iran started work on the field long after Qatar managed to exploit its part of the field. Iran’s first gas production began in December 2002 at phase 2 by gas injections to Assaluyeh plant via underwater pipelines.The country currently produces about 100 million cubic meters of gas, 200,000 barrels of condensates per day. Production is estimated to increase to 175 million cubic meters of gas per day in 2012.‘The development of phases 19, 20, and 21of the field was showing great progress, expressing hope that more phases will begin joining the national energy grid in the near future,’ said Mousa Souri.
