Official Underscores Iran's Ability to Meet Needs for N. Medicine http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.php?nn=9002300561
A senior Iranian nuclear energy official stressed that despite western sanctions against Tehran's peaceful nuclear program, Iran is able to meet its needs to nuclear medicine. Pointing to the sanctions imposed on Iran in March 2007, Deputy-Director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Qannadi stated, "Shortly after these sanctions, the experts in this organization [AEOI] managed to produce the radio medicines the country needed."
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the 3rd International Congress and 15th Annual Meeting of Nuclear Medicine in Tehran, Qannadi highlighted the significance of the fledgling field of nuclear medicine and the essential role of radio medicines in the diagnosis of a number of fatal diseases.
"For instance, between 800,000 and one million Iranians use the generator gel molybdenum-99/technetium-99m in at least 130 nuclear medical centers across the country," he said, putting the figure at an annual 40 million around the globe. Qannadi further lashed out at the West for imposing sanctions against Iran -- under pressure from the United States -- as a "dastardly move," saying Iran has produced its required radio medicines through the AEOI as early as the 1970s.
